Classic UK Minitrix Models - Dock Tank
The Minitrix 0-6-0 Dock Tank is a remarkably versatile little n-gauge engine. It is petite, measuring just 57mm from buffer to buffer, has no traction tyres and just 6 points of contact with the track.
Nevertheless, with all 6 wheels driven, 3 negative pickups and two positive, and tiny wheels, it is much more capable of hauling heavy loads than some of the A4 locos that I have owned. Valve gear is kept to an absolute minimum, and purists would probably want to steer well clear of it. But this is one of its attractions - there is less to go wrong, and less for little fingers to break. No surprise then, that variants of this loco are to be found in many starter packs.
There is no separate body weight - instead, the loco body is cast metal, and the whole package runs smoothly and silently around the track, taking inclines and points in its stride, with or without a load. I've just tried it up a 2% grade with 17 hopper wagons, each filled with about 10g of solder wire.
With so little to go wrong, these few pages are to do with maintenance rather than repair - but since the first thing that I did was to completely dismantle it when my e-bay purchased, second hand version arrived through the post, I thought I would take some photos and share the results.
