Classic UK Minitrix Models  -  Class 47
Introduction

It took me a long time to locate good examples of this delightful little engine, and I wasn't going to bother, but I landed upon 3 pristine motors in their original packaging and decided that for them to be any use, I needed some class 47s need spare motors.  Eventually I acquired a County of Norfolk.   The first thing I did was test it.  The second thing I did was take it apart and spruce it up a bit.  Why ?  Well it was slightly hesitant, as indeed am I compared to how I was in 1982, and I felt that the motor would probably benefit from a little fresh lubrication.  Also, I wanted some photos to put on the website.

It was a revelation.  It is much slimmer than the other Minitrix diesel offering - the class 27 and class 42, and is more in keeping with the modern Farish offerings for scale.  The motor is much smoother than the Class 27 - possibly due to the more secure motor mounting - it clips into place and each end of the axle is mounted in a nylon bearing.  It is possible to tune out the raspy nature of the class 27 motors by slackening the mounts and repositioning the motor slightly.  There is no need for that with this model, although it is still noisier than the Farish Class 66.  Most noticeable is that this Class 47 runs much more slowly than the earlier Minitrix models such as the Class 27, the Scotsman, Gresley, Britannia and even the little 2MT DockTank.
